Tinkergarten provides high-quality early childhood learning in the healthiest classroom of all—the outdoors. Families connect with trained leaders in their local community for play-based kids classes that help develop core life skills, all while having fun!
Although I grew up just outside West Philly and went to school in Center City, I always loved being outdoors as a kid. But it wasn’t until I began teaching and leading wilderness trips---in the Utah desert and mountains of Virginia, with Philadelphia Outward Bound in the Wissahickon and Delaware Valley, and as an English teacher at Independence Charter School---that I really understood the importance of getting outside with kids. So many of my students were initially uncomfortable outdoors. But whether on a day hike or a three-week expedition, I began to notice that all my students flourished once they got outside, forging unforgettable connections both with the natural world and with each other, and learning deeply about themselves. As a mom to two young boys, I want my children to feel at home in nature, to have time to explore, play, and make meaning outside. And what could be better than doing this in community, with other children and families? I’m thrilled to bring Tinkergarten to the Philly families who love our city, but who also feel the need for more regular doses of the natural world in their lives!
